Amethyst is a variety of quartz colored purple by trace iron impurities and natural irradiation within the earth without both elements present, the same quartz forms clear or a completely different shade. Its color can also fade with prolonged sun exposure, so darker amethyst is generally the result of stronger natural conditions during formation.
