Horn Coral belongs to the rugose coral family, marine animals that first appeared roughly 488 million years ago and went extinct around 251 million years ago meaning they predate the dinosaurs by hundreds of millions of years. Unlike colonial corals that grow in clusters, these fossilized as solitary, cone-shaped individuals, which is where the "horn" name comes from.
This one was sourced from Texas and wire-wrapped in gold filled wire rather than drilled, keeping the fossil's original shape intact.
