Description
Locked in Stone
Ammonites were shelled marine predators, distant relatives of today's squid and nautilus, that vanished alongside the dinosaurs roughly 66 million years ago. This particular fossil is around 105 million years old, formed when a shallow saltwater sea covered much of what is now North Texas.
The coiled shell fossilized as sediment gradually replaced the original shell material with minerals, preserving the ridged spiral pattern in stone.
Good for anyone drawn to holding something that predates almost all of human history.
