Agate forms as silica-rich groundwater slowly fills cavities in surrounding rock, layering mineral deposits over tens of millions of years until the cavity hardens solid. West Texas is known for producing several distinct varieties this way, including Red Plume, Bouquet, Black Plume, and Pom-Pom Agate.
